Reasons Why Windows Get Smashed

The moment a window gets smashed is one which lives in your mind for a very long time. There is something particularly shocking about a window being smashed as it is such an invisible force-field between you and the outside world which when suddenly broken is frightening and unnerving as well as usually being expensive. To avoid this happening, here are is a list of the more common ways a window can get smashed:

Ball

Ball games inside and outside of the house are a prime cause of smashed windows. Be it smashing a cricket ball from the end of the garden, or a game of kitchen ‘keepy-uppys’ getting a bit out of hand. This of course could be avoided by banning ball games near windows (especially cricket).

Fight

Fighting, whether serious or in play often involves flying limbs and other body parts. Also, fights can involve thrown items such as ornaments and house cats. If fights near your windows are likely, perhaps get curtains or blinds to provide some protection from showers of lobbed knick-knacks.

Badly fitted

If a window is fitted incorrectly, many factors can cause it to break. If the window isn’t sealed in place adequately, it is possible for it just to topple out of the frame. Or if the frame is made with untreated wood, there is a chance that with an extreme of temperature the frame could shrink, squeezing the glass enough for it to shatter.

Cleaning

A window cleaner’s nightmare! While cleaning should ordinarily be only a good thing for windows, this is one time people most often touch and rub the glass. If perhaps a piece of glass has a flaw, touching or bumping it at the wrong moment can cause it to develop a larger crack or even just break.

Bird Strike

Bird strike is a term usually reserve for high flying pilots who encounter a flock of birds at 500 miles an hour at 40,000 feet. But in your home, depending on where your house is located or how big your windows are, you may well encounter this phenomenon. It’s a more common occurrence for those with lean to conservatories for instance due to the often very large window area. Birds can fly pretty fast and often weigh as much as a bag of sugar. This combined with their brains being the size of a gooseberry can often result in a bird smashing into or even through a window. Having your UPVC windows damaged can be costly so ensure that they are guaranteed.

While these are amongst the most common reasons for windows being smashed, they are by no means a complete list. Respect your windows and they will keep you warm and dry.
